In collaboration with a new partner, Alternative Motion Project, the Grand Symphonic Winds will play "Lights from the Yellow Star: Music of Sorrow and Love," by Boris Pigovat.  Composed in 2010 and dedicated to the University of St. Thomas Symphonic Wind Ensemble and conductor Matthew J. George, the Music Director of the Grand Symphonic Winds, Pigovat’s work is based on the book Light from the Yellow Star: A Lesson of Love from the Holocaust (1994), by retired University of Minnesota pediatrician Dr. Robert O. Fisch.  Dr. Fisch is a Holocaust survivor, participated in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, and emigrated to the United States in 1957.  Through his writing and painting, Dr. Fisch communicates that “we must remain human even in inhumane circumstances.”

In a new dance work inspired by Pigovat’s piece and created by AMP’s Co-Artistic Directors Kristin Howe and Joanna Lees, “On the Horizon” explores conflict, community, isolation, desperation, and hope within a whirlwind of bodies featuring nine dancers.  Special Guest, Soprano Lindsay Kesselman, joins GSW and AMP on stage as an “artist of growing reputation for her artistry and intelligence…with a voice of goddess-like splendor” (Fanfare, 2017).  This work is one of four dance works featured in Alternative Motion Project's 8th Season Performance, 8.
