Lift-Off – Roger Zare (1985 - )
Per the composer, this “quick and energetic piece” was written as a “celebration of human space exploration.” Originally composed for orchestra and premiered in 2006, Zare transcribed it for wind ensemble in 2007. The latter version won first prize in the third annual Frank Ticheli Composition Competition. “It is a thrilling ride for both the performers and the audience.”
Three Dance Episodes from On the Town – Leonard Bernstein
On the Town is based on the 1944 ballet Fancy Free, scored by Bernstein with choreography by Jerome Robbins. The ballet was expanded into the musical, which premiered 8 months later, and tells the story of three US Navy sailors on leave for a single day in New York City. The three dance episodes are:
Dance of the Great Lover
Pas de Deux
Times Square Ballet
Petrushka – Igor Stravinsky
This is the story of 3 puppets – Petrushka, the Ballerina, and the Moor – told in 4 scenes:
The Shrove-Tide Fair
Petrushka
The Blackamoor
The Shrove-Time Fair and the Death of Petrushka
The ballet was first performed by the Ballets Russes in 1911. The wind ensemble adaptation by Alexandre F. Travassos maintains most of the solo instruments and all the well-known themes.
